Research on tuba performance:instrument choice

Post by tubadoug »

Hi all,

I recently posted a request for help on a research paper dealing with Die Meistersinger and tuba choice when playing the excerpt. The information I began receiving has sparked my interest, as well as my professor's. My presentation went well and my final paper is due in a few weeks. I thank everyone who helped me with the original assignment.
I am inspired to continue research beyond this assignment. I mentioned to my professor that there was a lot of credible information on tubenet that I would like to be able to cite and we discussed ways to do so. Essentially, I will have to do research on any author to be able to defend him or her as a reliable source. In addition, I need expressed permission from any person to use their information in my research.
I will not cite anything without permission of the author, so do not worry about me digging up old posts and recording them without your permission!
I would like to open the flood gates with a few questions. Unlike my last post, I am not only looking for published sources.
Feel free to post your own information on the forum, refer me to an older post that deals with related information, or send me a private message.

The focus of my research is tuba choice (6/4,5/4, 4/4...F, E-flat, C, B-flat...rotary or piston...etc)

What is the local tradition of your professional tuba players?

How long has your orchestra/any given orchestra had a certain tradition and why?

What instruments did you win your audition with?

What instruments did your friend and neighbor win his audition with?

Has a conductor asked you to change tubas at any given time? If so, what was the piece/reason/ensemble etc.?

Which is more important to you when choosing the instrument to use - historically informed performance practice or the sound of the instrument?

Have practices changed because of technical advancements in our instrument manufacturers?

Is two tubas enough to win any audition?

What other good questions am I leaving out?
(I find asking the right questions can be one of the tougher aspects or research)

I think it would be interesting to look at the number of auditions (perhaps no high profile jobs recently) that have been won with one tuba!
