New Miraphone 186 CC's

Post by tubaguy9 »

I heard they have a long whole step fifth valve now...does anyone have any pictures of them? I'm adding one to my 4 valve horn, and hoping maybe seeing pictures of a new one can help me figure out how to put on the fifth valve tubing

Is that the same as the flat 2nd valve?

Oops, sorry, it's the sharp 12. I'm interested in how folks use that option.

it's a long whole step. So a flat first valve. Mainly for extra fingerings, or to play a low F or below.

Tubatinker (Dan Schultz) has done a 4- to 5-valve conversion on a 186. Check it out:

right...I've already checked into Schultz's conversion...but the thing is with his, is that he has a long 2 whole step rather than a single long whole step.

and the pic that was found is a new one with the long 2 whole step setup...

??? The one I posted? That's a flat whole step setup. My old 186 had the flat double whole step (2-3). THAT looks like this...

You could put a 1291-style fifth at the top of the dogleg (after the other 4 valves, coming up on the player's left of the 4 valves). Or, a dependent 5th in the 4th loop? :D

I am not a fan of dependent valves. Occasionally, for example 1+5 may be needed as an alternate or trill fingering, depending on the passage. This is precluded with a dependent arrangement.

Even with a back picture, it's hard to see the assembly of the fifth valve. I got the picture from http://www.hornguys.com" target="_blank.

I'm adding one to my 4 valve horn
Man, you don't have to have your nice 186 cut up! A 5th valve on a 186 CC is pretty unnecessary... most of them have *great* and very usable privileged (false) tones, which can actually be louder and easier to use than playing through all that valve tubing down there. And for other notes, (Db and F) a small slide pull or adjustment is plenty!

Just thought I'd chime in -- wouldn't want you to risk the sound of your 4U 186 by adding more plumbing!
