Yeah - but which do you love more???

Both your fiance and your three Goldbrass tubas are hanging off a cliff. You can save either the fiance or the tubas -but- not both - which do you save???

I choose which I think most suitable for the gig!

In the orchestra that will be the Neptune where contrabass tuba is asked, or seems appropriate such as Russian music, Mahler, late Bruckner, etc. and the PT-15 for bass tuba type music such as Berlioz, Brahms, early Wagner and even Elgar.

The PT-20 I have mainly got for band playing which is why it is fitted with carrying hooks and lyre block, although I will also use for small ensemble playing, or any occasions when I am unsure what is required with orchestra, such as new music.

The Neptune will also come out in band for larger concerts, or when I am the only tuba - while the PT-15 is great for solos.

I expect all three tubas to go out being played most weeks! :)

Just curious, what mouthpiece(s) do you use with each of your tubas?

The PT-90 is my favorite on both the CC's, while on the F I either use a PT-65, or a Schmidt 322.

The later has a cup midway in depth between the 65 and 90 and I like when I want a broader tone on the bass tuba (such as for Elgar). It can also be used to brighten the tone on the CC's.

I also have a PT-50, but very rarely use. I do not usually feel a big mouthpiece necessary when the Neptune provides all the breath and weight I ever want.

Yes, but the real question: how does your fiance regard your tubas? My wife was well aware of my music avocation going in, and accepted a substantial part of the budget over the years would be to finance it (not just tubas). When we looked for a house, one criterion was an extra bedroom to be converted to a music storage room. Until a downturn of finances dictated otherwise, all gig money was discretionary. She even co-signed the loan to get my 186.

Now, if your fiance considers your magnificent trio the same way, marry her immediately and don't look back!

My fiancé is fully aware and happy about my tubas and the importance of music to me as an avocation, so I have no concerns in that direction.

However, I am fully aware that once we are married there will be other financial priorities, making the purchase of further tubas unlikely - so am thankful I have acquired the line up of my dreams first

Buy the tubas now; it's more difficult later.

We can have many tubas, all at the same time and the horns never get jealous but we can really only have one wife at a time.

I once had a teacher who said, "I can't change my wife, so I'll change my horn!"
