I was poking around in GoogleBooks and found this picture of a 1959-ish experimental horn:
A curled up Contra-Alphorn? The bell looks very strange in the picture - maybe bad airbrushing.
anyway, there is a lot of interesting stuff from the past to search out - I have not even tried "tuba" as a search.
