Non-Euro shank mpcs in Euro receivers?

Post by Mike Finn »

My current production tuba shank size is 0.525” at the tip, right between Standard American (.520) and the larger European (.530). Although I have not had any reports of my mouthpieces not working in Euro receivers, I would like to be able give potential customers a better answer than “I haven’t had any complaints.” I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who is using or has used one of my mouthpieces or other non-Euro shank mpcs in a modern tuba that is commonly known to require a Euro shank mouthpiece. Specifically, what make and model tuba, and does it fit OK? Did it do anything unusual/unexpected to the response or intonation that might be attributed to an improper fit?

Thanks in advance!

and FWIW, although the shop where these are made for me does not do custom work or "one-offs" I can send any of my mouthpieces to Stork re-shanking (or skeletonizing, or re-countouring the rim) at a very reasonable price and turnaround time.
