My instruments were all tuned at the factory. I don't know what's wrong with the res of you. I always play 100% in tune. Once, I thought I played a note out of tune. Surprisingly, I was flat out wrong about that. You guys need to sharpen your tuning skills a bit.

Re: Me & My Tuba, Add You & Yours
As I was learning to play, I was myself interested in the phenomenon of the older players constantly adjusting a slide or two. So, I sat down with a friend who had a tuner and went through some scales slowly without adjusting anything. Apparently I didn't need to anyways, because all of the notes, according to them, were in tune perfectly. This was on a Yamaha 641, my school horn at the time.

I have just found this nice shot of me with my plastic mid-1970s Reynolds Sousaphone, wearing the fancy Hawaiian shirt uniform of the California Repercussions that we first used when we played at the NFL Pro Bowl:
Here is a back view from a different event:
(BTW, The Reapers will be playing at the Sacramento Jazz Festival 5/28 & 29, and the Washington D.C. Independence Day Parade 7/4, with some other performances in New York and Philadelphia in the week before that.)Here is a back view from a different event:

Re: Me & My Tuba, Add You & Yours
I used a projector to show the image (Dr. Noah Zark, from the 1950's Mad Magazine "Flash Gordon" parody drawn by Wally Wood) and I traced it lightly in pencil. Painted in black acrylic oil paint, then when that was dry painted the red in acrylic. This was done in the mid 1980s when I was playing in the Stanford Band - I have touched it up a few times since.kegmcnabb wrote:David,
Love the graphic! Did you paint that on?
Here is a front-on view (taken during our performance at the Blumenau, Brazil Oktoberfest.) If you want to do a more temporary bell art, use tempera paints (water-based) and then spray with a protective clear-coat like Krylon. (This might not hold up in a heavy rain.)

Marty Neilan holding the 1928 Conn Donatelli. Like the horn, haven't had it long enough to decide whether I love it or not.

Yes, they are too similar to have both. Sell me the Eb and buy a Cerveny F.

They are somewhat similar, I will have to do a side-by-side when I get the Giant back from the Bloke after it gets hot rodded.Bob Kolada wrote:Not you.KiltieTuba wrote:Only the bell (28"). I would say the bells are probably nearly identical, and the bottom bows are similar, with the small side on the Eb bow tapering faster than the CC bow. For whatever reason, the Eb is much, much lighter than the CC.
I fell in love with the sound of the Giant, so when the similar belled Donatelli came available, I wanted to give it a try.
