Worth Restoring?

Post by Rev Rob »

I came across this King/Conn tuba on ebay. The entry level bid and cost for shipping are low enough to temp me. I am wondering if this is a worthy tuba for restoration; thats where the big bucks would come into play.

Looks like an old baritone to me. I'd ask some questions... like model number, S/N and how tall it is.

The valve tubing length sure looks like a baritone, and one in not great shape at that!

Even if you're looking for a baritone to honk around on, make sure that the valves aren't worn out!
Instead of talking to your plants, if you yelled at them would they still grow, but only to be troubled and insecure?

I guess the real trick is finding a vintage tuba whose reputation as a good playing/performing instrument is firmly and widely established. I would imagine it helps to be a bit of a historian about older tubas. That and being a part of this BBS to get ideas and opinions before big bucks are spent.

That looks like a 1960's or 70's typical school model. Nothing to turn your nose up to, but not worth a big investmentto restore. A little searching on the auction site9s) and you'll find he same or very models in a variety of conditions and at a wide variety of price points.

Happy hunting!
