CONN EEb 24J

Hello everybody,

Visiting the Conn Loyalist website, I saw that Conn made a EEb Tuba with 4 front action valves.

I'm curious to see what It looks.. If someone has a photo?...

And if you know someone who wants to sell one, I'm interested in.

24J apparently is one of the model designations recycled by Conn, as the most known 24J is a BBb.

My galleries has one Conn Eb with 4 front action pistons. Part of the text says:

This is a ... 1921 C.G. Conn Eb GOLD plated 4 valve tuba. This tuba was specially gold plated by Conn for the "Million Dollar Band" where all the instruments were gold plated. The bell engraving says: MADE BY / C.G. CONN LTD. / ELKHART / IND. The serial number is 1756xx. It stands 36" tall and has a 20" bell.

Although the "body" is the same, Klaus' photos are a more accurate representation, as the leadpipe, tuning slide, and fourth valve tubing on my former horn were all changed. According to some sources, the 24J (aka Conn Giant) used about the same bell and bottom bow as the BBb Conn Monster. The intent of these horns was to get a contrabass sound out of a bass tuba.

Also looks like yours had the moveable part of the 1st valve loop changed.

Imperialbari: your tuba looks fantastic! How about intonation? Isn't it too difficult to play in tune ?

What's your feeling with the tuning slide before the first valve? Do you think it's changing intonation on others slides when you move this tuning slide?

The tuning slide before the valve block works like any main tuning slide, only it is hard to move it during actual playing. The change in the 1st valve tubing seen on Marty’s sample makes it possible to adjust notes involving the 1st valve during playing.
