Bought New Music

Post by cwarren »

Just bought some new music to read through. For those of you who have played any of these, what are your opinions about them? Good recital material?

Shostakovich: Adagio, from the Limpid Stream

Brahms: Serious Songs - Denn es Gehet dem Menschen; Ich Wandte Mich; O Tod, wie Bitter; Wenn Ich mit Menschen und mit Eulenszungen Redete

Brahms: Songs - Standchen; O Kuhler Wald; Minnelied; Sonntag

Morricone/Baadsvik: Gabriel's Oboe,

Mendelssohn: On Wings on Song

Saint Saens/Sheridan: The Swan, from Carnival of the Animals

Rachmaninoff: Vocalise, Op. 34

Best!

Thanks, Hal.

I've never heard the album, but I'll be sure to try and find someway to get it. I really like listening to the Brahms' songs with a vocalist. Very easy going on the ears.

Cheers!

Are you still only playing CC? Because a couple of those are going to require some serious maturity to play. Specifically Gabriel's Oboe and The Swan. The tessitura in them may be pretty interesting. Not saying you can't do it, but saying it may be taxing.

I do still play CC, but I have a Yamaha F that I will probably play (perform) most of these on. I've actually been told it is always better to try and learn as much as you can on big tuba? Whether it's true or not, I've learned the last couple of pieces that way and it seems to work well.

And you're right, Gabriel's Oboe is probably going to be the most taxing of the rep. But, I guess it's something to aim for? Haha

Do you recommend playing any of these on CC as opposed to F? Although, I guess it just depends on the sound you want.

I've played all the pieces on your list except the mendelssohn, playing them all on bass. One piece that I think would be fun to do on CC is Adagio from Limpid Stream.

I heard Scott Watson play this at UCA several years ago and was instantly in love.

I think the Adagio will be one of my favorites. We'll see how it goes! I'll experiment with both horns
