For those who think you *need* a bass tuba to perform it (at one time, that included me):

The first time I heard it performed was on a BBb (Mirafone 186) by one of my college buddies.

I used a BBb for this, although that was back when I thought BBb was a bass tuba. Ignorance is bliss.

Me too, more than thirty years ago. I knew there were tubas in other keys, but had no idea why, and I didn't have access to any. So I soldiered on through this movement with my BBb for a solo and ensemble competition, and enjoyed it. Never tackled the rest of the piece.Virtuoso wrote:I used a BBb for this, although that was back when I thought BBb was a bass tuba. Ignorance is bliss.
I couldn't begin to play it now. I did replace my long lost copy of it a few weeks ago. Maybe in a few months I'll take a crack at it again.

Yeah, I did it on Bb for my senior recital (my only horn).

I heard an Army BBb player do this concerto. No clams; good intonation; etc. My only reservation was that the breadth and body of tone were inappropriate for this work. Still, I was very impressed that the guy nailed all the notes using a contrabass tuba.

Back in high school I played the Vaughan Williams mvt. 1 and 2 at State Solo and Ensemble on a Conn 20J, and earned a 1st division on it. There was a vid of me playing it on youtube but something happened to it, can't seem to find it anymore.
