Valve corks/stops for Cerveny BBb (pics attached!)

Post by AndyCat »

Hi All,

Where would I get replacement stops/corks/bumpers/whatever for my Cerveny/Amati BBb? No idea on rotary tubas, and here in the UK they're not common at all as far as spares go!

It isn't critical that the replacements be actual Cerveny parts. It is important that whatever you do use allows for your rotors to be properly aligned. You can use round cork stock, rubber or neoprene cord. I have found it is easiest to install these if you remove the stop arm and the bumper plate itself.

I am from an old era, where parents’ occasional wine corks and a sharp knife were the remedies. Part of the trick is about selecting a part of the cork, which is as free from the dark and non-flexible stuff as possible. The little cork block hasn’t to be rounded, only the surface to be bumped shall be reasonably even.

I held the cork block down in front of the opening at the end of the horseshoe with my fingers and pushed the cork into its seat with a small screwdriver. The cork was oversize and I pre-compressed it when seated also by means of the screwdriver. only after that I did the fine adjustments by means of the sharp knife.

You tuba is kind of interesting:

Amati tells it being post-WWII. It doesn’t say Cerveny, but B&F and the anchor say Bohland & Fuchs. Likely a fairly recent revival of the B&F brand. Do you have the story behind this instrument?
