New Compensating Euphonium

I am a highschool student about to leave for college and I am trying to find the best deal I can for a compensating euphonium. I'm a little short on money right now so I'm looking for a horn new that plays well but isn't ridiculously expensive. Or a used horn like a YEP-642 that is still in good condition. Any ideas on a horn?

A used, well maintained horn of a reputable brand will usually be a better deal and last just as long or longer. Try before you buy.

Although made in China, the Schiller instruments are very good.

The Schiller is a good value for the money, but unless the robustness of its construction has gone up substantially in the past 4-6 month versus that of the Tuba Exchange and Tuba MM offerings, with which it shares a common manufacturer, it's ability to stand up to the use cycle one would typically expect of an undergraduate music major questionable.

Look on the ebay.uk site . They have older Boosey&Hawkes Imperial euphoniums on there for sale at very good prices . I have owned a 1966 model and now own a 1977 model . I paid about $1,800 for both of them including the shipping costs. THe B&H Imperial's are great horns .

Here my experience with Yamaha Euphoniums: The 842 is so much better than the 642. I had bought a 642s for the college and frankly is was a dud. I personally wouldn't spend the money on a 642. One of my student has a 842s and it's fantastic.

I actually like the 321s better than 642s. I bought a used 321s two years ago (from someone on tubenet) and I'm very happy with it. It's free blowing and although brighter than my B&H, has a very nice tone.

Maybe you could do very well with a Schiller until you could afford buying a real top-of-the-line instrument.
