Now that you have all your transformational goodies out of it, you should present said empty box to the granddaughters and watch them transform it into something inspirational, like a princess castle or an indian wigwam. It will give all of you a couple of hours of pure joy! I lost a perfectly sound VMI box that way. Good use!
I am fortunate to have a great job that feeds my family well, but music feeds my soul.

He has a HN White Jumbo (32.5" bell), silver with gold wash interior.
His father bought it off of John Philip Sousa because it was too big - go figure since Sousa wasn't fond of bell-front sousaphones. It is one of three in the world - the other sister horns are in museums in England and New York. It was used at the opening of the Golden Gate Bridge and the Bay Bridge in California. Also at a Sousa commemoration performance at University of California Berkley, where the current owner stood on the 50 yard line surrounded by all the other sousaphones (entire field was packed from sideline to sideline), and then broadcast on TV (biggest sousaphone on the smallest player (He's only 5'9", his father was 6'1")). He is sending me some pictures in the mail.
Cool... do you know which museum in New York? I know the Met has a musical instrument collection, but I'd remember seeing this -- if it was on display, that is.

Also kind of funny that they pulled it out for a Sousa commemoration performance, given that Sousa didn't like it to begin with. "Hey Jack, look what weeee found!" :)

Just watched the first Chilean miner get rescued from the mine. Holy cow, that is one of the most unbelievable things I've ever seen.

Wade,

They can cut out your heart, but they can't take your soul. Be strong.

During my recovery, I was lucky enough to find a quintet that had ex-pros and gifted amateurs that would put up with me. It's boggling to find a group that gets together just because they like to make great music, not just because they're paid.

My prayers, too.

And don't forget, those cool tools that you made can be used to REMOVE soundposts, also ;>)

I discovered several coarse hairs growing out of the top of my ear this morning. I tried to pull them but they would not come out. A pair of needlenose visegrips from the toolbox worked quite nicely. ouch.

It would ... if it's cool with Wade. I would be surprised. Wade's a big boy, and while sometimes he can really tear one off on Tubenet, if he's been in the business for 25 years, he knows better than to think it's a safe bet to earn a decent living and retire at 65. He also has (I hope) some sense of his stature here, and knows that he can share his story with us, without having it come off like an appeal for cash.

And it might be interesting reading for those among us who are thinking about career choices. On that score, it seems kind of one-dimensional, though - do tuba players mostly survive on "legit" stuff like symphonic orchestra, or are is there money in the local popular music scene?

Reading this little bit made me feel like my comment was a little insensitive, but it was just an odd display of sympathy: I'd gladly do what I can to help the Rackleys, but what I can do is virtually nothing. Money consumes so much of our lives and it hurts to see an instance of it affect one of our major TubeNet contributors. It's interesting the way a mediocre musician can become famous through extremely suggestive songwriting and public image, but playing in a modest full time symphony barely earns a modest living.

I hope Wade can keep doing what he loves for money without too many bumps in the road like this one.

Wade is going through some financial hardships right now, but he also has something that money can never buy. He's got a community of people here that love and care about him.

I finally watched "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" over the weekend.

Meh, it was okay. But really, just like Forrest Gump warmed over. It's one of the few movies I haven't fallen asleep during recently, but I wouldn't bother to watch it again.

So I bought a new "new style" King mouthpipe for my raincatcher a while back. I initially thought the old one played better but wanted to test the new one out a bit. Well I have tried it out for a couple weeks now and swapped the old one back in and.......the old "old style" one still plays better. I am glad I bought the new one as a back-up mouthpipe. But the old one has a more open and even sound and response than the new one. I have already put over $200 of repair work into my King souzy and recently noticed that the mouthpipe where the gooseneck attaches into needs to be re-soldered to the first valve slide branch. It costs money to keep up my antique horns

My wife once had a student whom we laughed about because he would beat his forehead and exclaim, "Tupid!, Tupid!" if he messed up. It's the only appropriate thing for me to do at this point! I purchased ASO tickets for the Janacek Mass this week and mistakenly put it on my calendar for next week. Imagine my surprise when the 5 o'clock news reported on the event. "Tupid! Tupid! Tupid!"
