Conn 25J leadpipe length?

Can someone please measure the length of the leadpipe of a 25J?


I suspect mine is to long...

The 3rd partial F's are known to be flat on these horns. These Conns were made for A=440 but If you're in Europe playing at 442 or 443, it may be a little flat.

I play mine here in Europe in tune without any problems. All it took was 5 mins with a tuner set to 442 and I knew where the pitch tendencies were. Usually the tuning slide is almost all the way in and no tuning bit.

I highly recommend the 5 mins with the tuner before unsoldering, filling, bending cutting the leadpipe.

Thanks. I also have a 20J and I noticed two things:
- the leadpipe is shorter than the pipe on my 25J
- the tuning slide of the 20J is way longer

On the 25J in some point of it's life, the leadpipe stay at the receiver end got moved. You'll see a ring where it was before.

As a European I indeed tune at 442. It's - when warmed up - barely up to pitch with a tuning bit. I've only spent a week with it, but it seems to play better with the tuning bit (better soft). I use a Helleberg with btw. Third partial F is indeed flat (I use the recommended 1+3 in stead).

the 25J leadpipe is *exactly* (measured with a piece of rope) 2.5 cm longer. The angle without the bit is actually better (better sight). I'll try to make it work without the bit tomorrow. Thanks Tim.

And yes I will show some horn dorn in due time . The instrument needs a few repairs (bottom bow ferrules are now ducttaped because of leaks).

Ok. Tried it without a tuning bit for 2 rehearsals. To my mind the sound and flow are a lot better with the tuning bit. It's I think a matter of the optimal GAP. Since the leadpipe is 2.5 cm's longer I theorize that a shorter bit (2,5 cm's shorter) will work even better. Must not be hard for a repair genius to make a custum straight tuning bit. Mmm...

These horns were supplied with one standard Conn sousaphone bit. Probably in an effort to make them "adjustable" - like the Martin Handcrafts, which had two bits. Check the rest of the horn for leaks - they affect the intonation.

13 1/2" give or take maybe 1/8".

BTW... I use a single tuning bit in my 24/25J only to solve some ergonomic issues since I use the horn in a Wenger 'tuba tamer'. My main slide is normally pulled about 3/4" so the bit is not for intonation issues.
