What's that little loop on the back for? I can tell if it's actually attached to anything...

That 'little loop' is taken out of it's 'storage position' (as seen)... and the main tuning slide is repositioned to include the 'little loop' to put the horn in low pitch. This was pretty common on many of the York of that period.
