The PT-36 is more like a standard Helleberg with a PT-style rim (a bit wider and definitely more rounded). It was the first PT mouthpiece (originally numbered as the PT-1), and was intended as a vanilla, general-purpose mouthpiece for people to use on the instruments most commonly owned in those days, mostly 4/4 rotary tubas.DavidJMills wrote:those who have had experience with both please comment. The PT-48 is bigger, with a more rounded bowl. It's is an excellent anti-woof mouthpiece for a big tuba, but it might be a bit strong on a instrument that already has laser-like clarity, such as a Miraphone 186.
The 36 is closed on my Holton, but the 48 works well. But the 48 is a bit aggressive on my Miraphone 186, and the 36 is more normal.
