College Level Tuba Method Books

Post by erickvonsas »

Hello
I'm a tuba student at the college level and I was seeking suggestions on other method books.

I own:
Arbans Complete Method for tuba
Blazevich Vols. 1+2
Kopprasch 60 Selected Studies for BBb Bass
Remmington Flexibility Studies

Any feedback is good feeback

Thanks

Dear Erick,

There are piles of standards and I will others suggest those, but new and off the beaten are two books by TubeNet's own Ken Friedrich. Just like every other book I have ever played through I can't say I like all of the etudes, but these are fun, challenging and worthwhile to work your way through them. They can be found here:

For me personally, I have always liked the Tyrell Etudes. Maybe it was because I could actually play them...

Good luck,

For tuba:

-Bordogni, "43 Bel Canto Studies"

-S. Vasiliev, "24 Melodious Etudes for Tuba"

-Tyrell, "40 Advanced Studies for Bb Bass"

I also find the following trombone methods helpful when read down the octave. You could try them loco to build security in the high register, too.

-Fink, "Studies in Legato for Trombone"

-Schlossberg, "Daily Drills and Technical Studies"

-Rochut, "Melodious Etudes for Trombone"

If you're a music ed. major, you might want to consider the 1st and 2nd Book of Practical Studies for Tuba by Robert Getchell. Easier stuff, but presented in a really organized way and great for younger kids just starting on the instrument.

Another vote for the Bordogni. A few more come to mind: Snedecor for Low Register, Kopprasch for Technical Studies, Rochut-as someone already alluded to-is great for learning to read down an octave and to stretch out one's upper register.

Also, check into Wes Jacobs' library of books, many of which cater to certain aapects of playing. He has many options to chose from.

The books you have are a good start, but I'd get a copy of the Bordogni Bel Canto Studies ASAP. It's a great book for players at most any level.

Another book that I recommend as an option if you want something extremely challenging:

"36 Celebrated Studies for Tuba" - N. Bousquet

It's originally a cornet etude book, but transcribed for the tuba. Very challenging, but fun etudes to play.

...and 2nd on the Brass Gym and Breathing Gym.

Pick up Ken's new books. They are for more demanding and sound, IMHO, a helluva lot better.

No worries! Ken Friedrich. His site, and the etude books, can be found here:
