Just went to Dillon's - Dillon 191 copy?

I was in the neighborhood on business the last couple of days, so I stopped by to discover that Matt Walters was out on vacation. I had hoped to say hi and see his latest 6/4 (11/8?) creation. According to Steve the next one won't be in for a couple of months. But they did have a few other horns I was anxious to try out, specifically a Miraphone 190 and 291, a MW 2165 and a Rusk-cut (I think) Holton. None were to my taste, quite honestly, with the Holton least objectionable and the 190 a major disappointment. And I was expecting a much better feel from the 291 than it delivered. But in the BBb room I was VERY pleasantly surprised by the Dillon stencil 191 clone. Good fit and finish, tremendously responsive and very even-tempered. I have seen postings regarding the Chinese 191 wannabes, and wasn't interested at all - until now. Anyone care to comment on whether the Dillon version is representative of the group? Or maybe this model (or this particular horn) is an outlier (on the good side)?

1291 = pistons
191 = rotors
Same basic bugle.

A few years back, an Allora 191 passed through my hands. It was a good horn. Fit and finish seemed much better than other 'clones' that I've seen. Woodwind/Brasswind was selling the Allora horns and I'm guessing that they stood over the manufacturers and demanded quality that wouldn't tarnish their name.

I suspect that Dillon is demanding quality of the same caliber.

I asked Matt about a Cerveny a few weeks ago, he said they are more expensive and often not as in-tune as the Dillon-brand tubas.

I trust his opinion, but nonetheless, not the direction I want to go...

Compared to a Cerveny? I used to own a Cerveny Kaiser BBb that I personally selected from Walter Sear's stable of horns back in 1978. It was a dream horn. This 1291 copy (thanks Dan) is a different kind of horn - smaller, pistons, 5th valve - but also a dream horn. I cannot afford a BBb right now, and really don't need one. Someday I hope to get one so I have it available for the possible brass band or orchestral (Prokofieff or Rachmaninoff, say) gig. But not for a good while, unless I can "steal" one.

I played on a Cerveny "Piggy" in high school and I always wanted to try one of the Kaisers. I heard they were nice horns.
