Tuba vs. Sousaphone on Google Ngram Viewer

Post by David Richoux »

I was messing about with this new Google program that searches all of their scanned library for word usage - the results for tuba,Sousaphone are rather dramatic!

(that tiny blue line is Sousaphone ;-)

Look again at the scale of the "Y" axis -- if you zoom out to any reasonable scale, BOTH lines are essentially FLAT -- with a value of "zero" .... :(

(really, not too much difference between 0.00000 and 0.00005 ....)

Oh well ....

Ok. I guess I always knew our tastes were esoteric. I still enjoy it.

You also do have to figure the sample - Google is not inputting Band Director Magazine (is there such a thing?) or Modern Sousaphonist - they are doing books of general and technical interest, some in public domain, some not. Does "Tuba" show up in "The Great Gatsby?" - not sure, but I don't think so... neither does Sousaphone AFAIK ;-)
