Kinda surprised at the pro-DCI sentiment on this thread, but oh well.
Like others have said, you should make a "pro" and "con" list to march DCI. If I were in your shoes I would personally keep the job over this coming summer (aren't jobs hard enough to find in this economy?), make and save money, buy a good BBb and practice on my own time and routine and still have time for fun over summer. :tuba:

Well when I buy a tuba, it will be a CC tuba. I switched over my first semester and I'm so glad I did. I greatly prefer CC to BBb, but it's just a personal equipment preference. I'm grateful I'm at a school that has quality CCs for me to use, but with only two years left before I get ready to head to grad school, I really need to have my own horns. I plan on purchasing a CC first and then an F a few months after that.

I felt I should weigh in on this topic because I found myself in the very same situation you're in 2 decades ago. I had just finished high school and was getting ready to be a tuba performance major at Penn State. I also enjoyed marching band and thought DCI would be fun. I had gone to some DCI shows and was really smitten with the horn-line sound. To this day, one of my very favorite things is to sit in front of a horn-line warm-up arch. Wow. Drums are cool, but the pure sound of power brass alone? ...damn.

Anyway, I ended up marching Blue Coats in 1991 (not a fact many people know about me, but for some reason a pretty big calling card to my students). I now teach at the Univ. of Wisconsin-Platteville, and many of my former, current, and probably future students have or will march Scouts. I do agree with much of the sentiment on this post that the times have changed and pedagogy in Corps these days is pretty darn good...esp. with the Scouts. I also agree that you can play "healthily" if you choose to. You may not think that you can find time to practice, but the die-hards always do. I did. I specifically remember standing in the shade after lunch and before the afternoon rehearsals with my G contra learning all my harmonic and melodic minor scales. I got to Penn State with all 48 scales ready to go, 3 octaves---and arpeggios...slurred and tongued....yeah, I found a lot of time.

But few others in the Blue Coats at that time were as driven as I was in terms of individually practicing their instrument, and those practice sessions (and my rooky status) earned me a pillow to the head now and again on some gym-floor in the Midwest. Yup, DCI ain't for the faint of heart or the thin-skinned. But you have to have a thick skin to roll in this career, and DCI did teach me some professional/networking concepts.

All in all, as you've seen in this thread, folks that really enjoyed their Corps experience say "DO IT!" Those who didn't march say "Don't." I say, go to a camp or two, and decide for yourself. Yes, camps suck and are not as hip as the summer, but if there are some signs along the way during a camp that this may not be right for you: run, don't walk, to the exit door. It'll be a very regrettable summer otherwise (for you and your corps-mates). If however you find the camps exhilarating, you're in for a great ride! It really just comes down to what kind of guy you are...and none of us can help you decide that.

All the best,
Mike

Do it. Don't think twice. It's the only place you can be this summer where you will be playing your horn 10-12 hours a day, 7 days a week, all summer long. Your needs and survival are taken care of - so you can completely focus on yourself, your horn, and your crew. It's an amazing experience, unlike just about any other. Just go, get on the bus, get on the road and make some music.

Another person to talk to is Mike Roylance, the tubist of Boston Symphony and a professor at Yale University. I was an influence to me in 1990 while I was in Magic of Orlando. Mike had several years with Suncoast Sound (with a contra solo is 1987) AND was a founding member in Future Corps (and several CDs) until the corps was canceled by CEO of Disney.

And, if you want to do march this summer, talk to the management. They can give you a scholarship, sponsorship, or thing you can do to lessen the pain about money. Several friends when I was a member got a free ride over the summer.

Toss a coin -- which will help you out in the long run (think "résumé building" here) -- better? The experience gained in DCI (where you ARE spending quite some time playing), vs. the time spent practicing in a practice room (combined with whatever the money you would earn while working could purchase).

Nobody here can flip that coin for you ... happy flipping!

While I cannot speak about today's Scouts, I can say they once had a brass instructor whose behavior was destructive to a student of mine.

A recent student required a semester to recover from another corps. Another was harassed to buy a lesser grade of mouthpiece. There are good and bad outcomes.

Well I have decided that I will march. I've spoken with my tuba tech and he's gonna set me up to do all of the fund raising I need to do and is also going to help me find an affordable horn to purchase. Hopefully I'll get the best of both worlds!
