Is that the greasy combo? And the original topic has regressed to food. I take full blame for this one!

Is there a NON-greasy combo?

I try to vary my orders from day to day. There's the Philly Cheesesteak Combo (not really up to West Philadelphia standards - but adequate), the Philly Chicken Combo (I've never seen a "Philly Chicken" in Philly - but then, I never looked for one), and the ever-popular Cajun Philly Chicken Combo (are there any Cajuns in Philadelphia?) That last one might not actually be on the menu - but it ought to be.

All come with grease. Not "Rutt's Hut" class grease - but enough to make a (North) Joisey boy feel at home.
All are infinitely better that anything trying to pass as a "Philly Cheesesteak" in Alabama... These, and the crab cakes at the Quarterdeck, are what bring me back year after year!

The Days Inn, right across the street from Fort Meyers, has room rates right now that are cheaper than the "special conference rate" two years ago. It's not a luxury hotel, but it's good enough for me. Just google "Days Inn, Arlington, VA".

I'll probably be driving down early Thursday morning, in time to catch the first session. My son, Dan, might be flying down sometime on Friday. Does anybody know if there is transportation from the airport to the base or area hotels? I would imagine there is some kind of shuttle/limo service. I'm thinking that I wouldn't want to have to go to pick him up (sorry Dan) and miss a few hours of the conference. Any ideas? Thanks!

It's a very short taxi ride from Reagan National. I think I'd have him take a taxi to the pedestrian gate (or...the Days Inn across the street) and walk in.

But, if you have a car - I suspect that if you wait for him to land and call, you could drive there, pick him up, and be back in your seat in well under one hour. Most of your time would be in the security check if you are driving on/off the base.

I have done this in the past and never missed more than one "session". If necessary, he can hang out at the airport until it's convenient for you to leave.

All of this assumes he's flying into DCA - if it's Dulles, all bets are off.

Over the years, the Days Inn has received mixed reviews, which may be why it is no longer preferred by conference coordinators.

Another option, again, assuming the flight is to DCA--If his luggage is light, he can take the Blue Line metro from the airport to Rosslyn--that is a very short round-trip drive from Brucker Hall. Might take all of 10 minutes from Brucker Hall to Rosslyn and back.

The "official" hotel that the conference committee is dealing with is the Virginian Suites in Arlington--it is right off post near the Iwo Jima memorial.

I do not know what the conference rate is, but I know they have one.

Thanks for the info, guys. My son, being a first year teacher, doesn't want to miss Friday at school, which would mean Flying out on Friday afternoon, which would mean possibly arriving during the evening concert. Also, to fly out of LI would mean he can't fly Southwest into DCA. He either has to fly into BWI, which is a trip to Arlington, I imagine. Or, he can fly out of JFK, which is a trip from home, especially during rush hour. In any event, it's a pain and he probably will end up just passing on this year.

Then a smaller group will be playing Endearing Young Charms by Simone Mantia/arr. by Neal Corwell featuring one of our euphonium players. A quartet featuring myself, the other senior tuba major, our tuba professor, and the solo euphonium player will play Diversions by John Stevens.

We play Thursday at 4:00pm in Brucker Hall. I hope to see fellow TubeNetters in the audience!

I'm going to have to miss Thursday during the day this year. My big annual professional conference has been permanently shifted a week later in January, to avoid a federal holiday, and often the bosses schedule meetings around that conference to make it easier to bring people in for it. I have to be at one of those meetings this year. The good news is that the meeting is adjacent for Fort Myer, and so when my meeting is over, I'll be near at hand. So, for the first time in a long time, I'll miss the Thursday reading session, but duty calls.

Hours are typically Friday noon to 5:00 PM, and Sat 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
