weird idea for a silent brass euphonium mute

Post by elimia »

No laughing at this...I'm serious...well, at least it seems like a good idea.

I was thinking about taking the output from the Yamaha silent brass mute, transitioning to a 1/4" jack, into a preamp to bring the signal to line level, and in from there to a bass amp. I'm picking up a preamp this week for a different project but thought...what would that sound like? If it were to work, I could use a delay pedal, etc.

An electronic pickup for the euphonium...am I crazy? Anyone done something like this?

Exactly. I still have sounds I want to do simply out of an SM57, but this might be cool for some tonal colors. I'll give it a try and post up the results.

You might have an impedance mismatch, which can be reasonably dealt with. Talk with a knowledgeable audio technician.

This actually works quit well. I did it for a faculty recital a few years ago. I hooked up the silent brass to a guitar amp and was able to also mess around with a wa-wa pedal. I played the Jimmy Hendricks Star Spangled Banner. It went over better than I thought it would. Even without wearing the afro.
