Who, in your opinion, are the best (living) college teachers ? Doesn’t have to be in America..

All depends on the student. One student's best teacher is another student's worst teacher.

I would say that the best teacher is one that helps you realize your goal. No?

The one that kicks my ***. For a student like I was, that was very important.

My teacher can beat your teacher up.

Seriously, this is an area that's highly opinion that can't be answered. Good luck in finding the answer that's right for you!

Oy! Why people can't just answer a question, I don't understand! The question even says, "in your opinion". Sooooo, this is a chance to give opinions! Here's my list:

Dave Zerkel
Dave Fedderly
Floyd Cooley

Can't go wrong with any of these guys. :D

My best teachers?

Okay, I'll bite.

1.) My ears.
2.) My instruments.
3.) Every recording I have ever listened to.
4.) The real world.

I love all of my "teachers" and owe a huge bit to them. But, as Victor Wooten would say, they didn't TEACH me anything. They SHOWED me things, and I had to learn them on my own.

In music, as in life, we get told all these lessons.

"Do your daily routines."

"Long tones."

"Work on your ears."

"Read something every day to work on sight-reading."

"Transcribe, transcribe, transcribe!"

"LOCK IN WITH THE DRUMMER, OR YOU'RE FIRED!"

"3rds and 7ths!"

This could go on. We even tell people this things before we have truly learned them. Our "teachers" may have told us this, but we haven't learned it ourselves yet.

The most learning I have done was outside of the teacher's office, outside of academia. You're given the tools, but it takes time to put them to practice in the real world. The gig itself was the absolute best teacher. You could be the most technical player in the world, and even have some amazing solo chops and had nailed your first professional audition, but when you get thrown into that first gig, you WILL be the weaker player, no matter how much better you play than the 4th horn.

Also, any name given here has had failed students. Who's to blame there? There's a saying: there's no such thing as a bad student, only a bad teacher. If you have ever taught, or been in a studio with a great teacher and have also been in a studio with a mediocre teacher, you'd know there are still successful and unsuccessful students that come from both.

My junior high and high school band teachers: Larry Bedtke and Don Fisscum. Very accomplished musicians, I was the one who was distracted, who should have worked harder.
Beginning again to be a tuba player.
1291 King Double B flat with detachable bell.
