I live in Rockville MD and hope to attend the Army Tuba Conference. Is it possible to take a cab from the Rosslyn Metro station directly to Brucker Hall? With all the fun weather going on, I'd prefer to let someone else drive.

Yes. But it's only a 20-minute walk, partially uphill. I enjoy that walk, which passes the Iwo Jima Memorial with a stunning view of the DC mall and monuments in the background.

Returning home in the evening, you could probably catch a ride to any Metro stop from someone at the conference. Otherwise, you would have to phone for a cab to pick you up.

A couple of inches of wet slop fell early this morning, but the last forcast I heard is for 4-8 inches this evening. After tonight, things will get better.

Sleet is coming down as of about 3:30 pm, 1530 hrs, Wednesday afternoon, Jan 26, 2011. The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) authorized all government civilians in the DC metro area to leave work two hours early.

The total in the vicinity of Fort Myer is about five inches of very heavy, dense, wet snow. Driving is treacherous, I've seen car after car getting stuck trying to drive up the shallow hill on Courthouse Road across US-50 from Fort Myer. The driving peak this afternoon was ungodly. I'm listening to reports now (11:30 PM) about a guy stuck on the George Washington Parkway--he's been there for six hours. Many local roads are still jammed. Many inbound are stuck for the night--Sloan in Detroit, TubaRay in Charlotte.

But the snow has stopped, at least. Freezing temps tomorrow will make a real mess of things starting out, but the roads are expected to get better as the day goes on. Possible light flurries on Friday, but otherwise good weather is expected starting now.

Yes, it was a real picnic driving the Beltway this afternoon, with rain turning into a thunder-ice-pellet-storm then becoming very heavy snow, but from the Sheraton I see that the traffic is moving much better now and the roads are better than they were at 1730 hours.

I am told that they plan to have events tomorrow, but I would check an official source to be sure of the schedule, in case anything is delayed or changed.

Heh, well, I wasn't always up here. Born and raised in Baltimore, and went to school outside of DC. Yes, people drive worse up here. But that doesn't mean they drive well down there!

For any of you who made it to Arlington and perhaps are sitting in your hotel room waiting for the 1 pm start of the conference, how are the roads now? I woke up at 5AM to begin the clean up - 16 more in. overnight. We're getting hammered this winter. I'm inclined to hit the road around 10 AM - 11AM and go for it, hoping to be there for the 6:30 concert and the rest of the conference. Getting off LI might be a problem with numerous accidents on the major roadways. if I leave too late, I'll be driving on icy roads. Should I stay or should I go?

Hey Bill... I'd guess the worst part is probably going to be getting from LI to/through NJ (your neighborhood may be the worst part of all!) I'd bet the highways down in MD/DC are pretty clear by now. It was an intense storm, but it's not like it was *that* much snow in the end, only like 5" in DC.

But... let common sense prevail...

I will not be able to attend this conference for the first time in about 7 years. I've had a 104 fever and a crazy throat infection for over a week now. Fever now reduced after shooting up to 105 and an ER visit, throat about the same. SO in other words, no DC for me. There were a few events that I was really looking forward to.

So any tubenetters bring a recorder/video camera? The events I was hoping to be able to listen to were Tim Buzbee's recital tomorrow at 1:30pm, college teacher's recital Sat. at 8am, the Jim Self masterclass Sat. 10am, Harvey Phillips tribute 1pm(video I'm sure would be better for this one as they always have a slideshow)

i realize that they are most of the time live broadcast on the internet, but is there anyway I can get a recording mostly audio, but that 1 video of these events? I usually record the conference for my students' and my own reference. Sometimes that might be the only recording of some of the solo pieces we may be working on. Other times, the masterclasses were amazing, great words were said, and my notes are almost illegible and almost definitely unintelligible, so recordings have helped immensely.

Any help getting recordings would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
