Kauai's Alumni Band

Post by Tom Beck II »

With budget cuts affecting every venue in today's life, bands in public schools are often the first to feel economy's scissors. A small group on Kauai have gotten together and are attempting to provide a "music for fun" outlet where players who enjoyed their early school band experiences but don't want the grind of College or Professional level groups can oil up their horns and again find joy in music. I got involved as a retired band instructor as I needed a place to use my recently obtained Eb Helicon.
Here's a link to our local newspaper's on-line edition showing an article on our group. Be sure to watch the short video as I get a pretty good spread. http://thegardenisland.com/news/local/a ... 03286.html" target="_blank" target="_blank

Didn’t that helicon play a lead role in the operatic lawn mowing show?

Hummmm? I''m not sure how to answer that inquiry unless the definition of operatic means "valve closing aperture" wherein Joe Sellmansberger, from whom I got this, added a 5th rotor valve from a Conn which is dependent on the 3rd valve being open to be put in play. I have a Miraphone 5 valve Eb and a Cerveny 5 valve CC so the modified Weltklang fits right in. I'm currently considering the Cerveny 4 rotor F Bass Trombone to be modified to Eb but I recently tried one at Baltimore Brass and found it very difficult to play because the bore is so small, it's difficult to hang on to and the 1st valve was stuck.

There has been a photo floating where bloke plays opera arias on this helicon while sitting on his lawn mower (there is a certain term that I don’t remember).

And I guess the 5th valve sits in the 4th rather than in the 3rd loop.

I've not seen that photo but can weell believe it exists. He's probably out on a snow removal machine this time of year.
and thanks for the 4th not the 3rd valve dependency of the 5th rotor.
