Why do some feel the need to paint horns like this???

I just DON'T understand-- Did they think it really looked THAT bad??

Yea-- OK-- but doesn't paint like that effect the way it resonates ? -- That doesn't look like a thin protective coating-- Unless your worried about hand grenades--

In the current condition, dipping it in horse manure wouldn't make much difference in the way it plays! (note the huge dents!)

Even clear "paint" affects the way it resonates... within a small area. Out in the hall, not so much.

The dents, on the other hand, have a real influence in the standing waves produced by the mouthpiece.

This horn doesn't look like it has suffered such damage for it to be treated in this manner-- That's all I'm saying-- I mean, this is a musical instrument-- If it were beyond any repair, then by all means drill holes in it, slop paint on it ande hang it on the wall-- But there are a lot of people out there, most of them kids, who would give everything for a horn-- Why, most on this very board would not be where they are without that first introduction to music-- I dig that it's each person's right to do with their's what they choose-- But to me, this choice is lacking in taste-- If a musical instrument is no longer wanted, it should be given to some kid who WILL appreciate it-- If some one wants to slop a bunch of paint around, they should go buy some canvas or a boxcar for goodness sake!

When the range of options is small enough, the distinction between tasteful and boring becomes difficult and possibly irrelevant.

The red finish is the least of this old guy's problems. It could be sanded smooth on both sides and redone with a rattlecan. Depending on the final use of the horn, it could look OK.

The foot long dent that closes the tube over half way would be a much bigger problem.

Hardly the maker above here, but even if there was a C. Bruno company in NY, which even supplied the US Navy, this helicon very much looks like made in Europe.
