Courtois Bass Trombone

Post by SFA Tubajack »

Hey guys,

I have the opportunity to buy a Courtois bass bone and wanted some opinions about them. Has anyone played one of these horns, and if so, are they good?

Since you asked.... I have never played a Courtois instrument that I LIKED. My <limited> experience is that the pitch was suspect and the sound was not really what I was after. If you are looking for a bass trombone, you would be well served to stay with the more commonly sold instruments, Conn, Bach, Yamaha, Kanstul, Shires (if you can afford it), Getzen, Edwards. The Getzen Dave Taylor model is a GREAT instrument and is still reasonably priced. If your budget is limited, I have seen MANY used Conn 70 series and even some Olds George Roberts models that you can find on the lower end of the budgetary range. I'd call Steve Ferguson of the Hornguys (http://www.hornguys.com" target="_blank) and see what he has.

Thanks for the input!

I was asking because I can get one from the former sales rep at factory cost, so it will definitely be on the lower end of the budget, and from what I could tell they seemed to be decent horns. I'll have to try it to know for sure though.

The courtois bass trombones are excellent. the dual hagmann is my favorite but its incredibly heavy.

I don't think that weight will be that much of an issue, I've been lugging around my Kalison CC tuba for a few years now, plus marching sousaphone since 7th grade.
