JinBao 350 Junior Tuba
Has anyone had a chance to try one of these? The catalogue says it's a Bb, but I rather doubt looking at the illustration - maybe an F?
It is certainly small at only 612mm high with 295mm bell and 15mm bore

What's the retail?
Looks very cool. It might be worth trying...if the price is right.

Re: JinBao 350 Junior Tuba
I believe this is actually a euphonium.... not a BBb tuba.

That did cross my mind, but discounted because of the loop after the valves - surely that would make too long for euphonium?TubaTinker wrote:I believe this is actually a euphonium.... not a BBb tuba.

Exactly -- it's a Bb tenor, not a BBb contrabass.yadent wrote:According to the info I have, it is indeed a Bb Mini tuba which plays in the euphonium range.----.591" bore, 12" bell and takes a large shank mp. Can be had for $700 + shipping(bigbottommusicnw.com)

In simple, easy to understand words.... it's a EUPHONIUM!Kevin Hendrick wrote:Exactly -- it's a Bb tenor, not a BBb contrabass.yadent wrote:According to the info I have, it is indeed a Bb Mini tuba which plays in the euphonium range.----.591" bore, 12" bell and takes a large shank mp. Thanks for the info guys. May still be of interest to friend who was admiring my travel tuba. Also sounds good for the tuba player who wants to play euph parts occasionally (might be great for Bydlo?)

Re: JinBao 350 Junior Tuba
I'm thinking the loop after the valves is to bring the open fundamental pitch down to Bb, probably from C -- overall, it's proportioned more like a C tenor (especially the height) than a Bb (compare Cerveny CEP-533 Bb and CEP-534 C). If the loop is 4" in diameter (looks to be about that), it would add about a foot to the open length, which would do the job (8' C vs. 9' Bb).Neptune wrote:That did cross my mind, but discounted because of the loop after the valves - surely that would make too long for euphonium?TubaTinker wrote:I believe this is actually a euphonium.... not a BBb tuba.

Re: JinBao 350 Junior Tuba
IIRC, the Tubchen Bb and F are 18' contrabass and 12' bass tubas, just wound tighter (more loops) to be easier to handle and with smaller-diameter bells. They look like they'd be fun to play -- would like to try one someday. The JinBao, on the other hand, looks like a 9' tenor (rotary euphonium) to me.Ulli wrote:Something like that?

(brief tangent -- it's confusing to some people that the various instruments in the "bugle" family -- "tuba", "euphonium", "flugelhorn" -- have different names ... can you imagine the saxophones or clarinets -- or flutes -- putting up with that? Just us and the double reeds ... who'da thunk it?

Yes.
You can see the additional loops in Jestaedt's compact Bb. Also note the difference in length (80 cm vs. the Jinbao, 61 cm).
Assuming the Jinbao is the same model Tuba MM had on display last year at TUSABTEC, it takes a large shank EUPHONIUM mouthpiece.

I am instead going to get the Chinese copy of the Jestaedt 80 F for my friend. Be interesting to compare to my MW14 when it arrives!

I have 3 of the Jestaedt clones on the way! I have not laid hands on one yet, but 2 are allready sold to Tubenetters.I expect retail to be around $1,000.00, depending on finish choice. Look for reviews in June. The JinBao 350's are good choices for use as a "Tenor Tuba" or rotary Euphonium! I am ordering a similar axe in C, so you can expect reviews of that horn by July. If the C horn pans out, they'll be on bigbottomnw.com
