Information on Fucik's "Der Alte Brumber"???

Post by JayTuba »

Our assistant director of bands at the University of South Florida is looking for information on the following: Fucik's "Old-Sore Head" (Der Alte Brumber) which was apparently arranged by John Maston for Tuba and Band in 1946. I can't find any information about him or this arrangement anywhere. Specifically, I need a publisher and if there are any recordings available. Let me know if you have any leads and thanks in advance!

Your search might come out with a better result if you didn’t mix up German and English spellings.

The German title is Der alte Brumbär (the web might also accept Der alte Brumbaer).

At least one WW-quintet performs this piece under the English title of The old Grumper.

Hallo Klaus,
richtige Schreibweise ist Brummbär mit zwei m.
Das ist so, weil dadurch das u kurz ausgesprochen wird.
difficult?

Yes, Brummbär in German. I made the mistake of accepting only 79700 returns in Google for the version missing an m. The correct spelling gives 327000 returns.

This all goes to emphasize the importance of exact spelling when looking for information.

I have a nice recording of the Czech Brass Ensemble performing it in 1994. Here are the liner notes:
"Brass music admirers are certain to be delighted by Julius Fucik's "Old Grumbler," originally a virtuoso piece for solo bassoon. Here, in Antonin Pecha's arrangement, this amusing composition reemerges in a new form, delivered by solo tuba, brass ensemble and percussion. Interestingly, Julius Fucik, a military bandleader in the Austro-Hungarian imperial army, was posted successively at Zagreb adn Sisak, Croatia, Sarajevo, and Budapest."
