Help needed with mouthpiece

Hi Guys,

Last saterday I bought a Miraphone 289 (see picture). I traded my Dalyan reference Tuba in, wow what a difference in sound

Next to the miraphone is a Kalison Eb which I play with a Perantucci PT-24+, but this isn't the best match for the Mira I believe. It performs very well on the Eb, but not great on the Mira. Now I have two other MP's a denis wick 3L and a conn Helleberg copy, but these are not great either. (It could also be me, because it is a new instrument and I have to get used to it...)

So far the Perantucci is the best, but at what direction can I search for a mouthpiece for my new Tuba? Does any body have tips? That is much appreciated.

Awesome new tuba! I tried one of those a few years ago, and it was great!

There are dozens and dozens of options, but one starting point could be to try a Miraphone mouthpiece... looks like they ship these tubas with a TU-33 mouthpiece. Try one of those?

Am I correct in assuming from your name you're from the east? (I grew up in Twente)

I've found a problem with this board in this respect is that it is rather U.S.-centered, and the advice will include a lot of U.S. mouthpiece makers. I'd really, really love to get a Blokepiece, or a Mike Finn, or a Giddings & Webster, but previous experiences with shipping & customs keep me from even trying to order them.

If you believe in his methods you could pay Henk Rensink a visit, at his home in Apeldoorn or one of the many places around the country, and get professional, personal advice.

I play the Miraphone 187 and in general I like the bowl(isch) shaped mouthpieces best. I also played the 186 and liked bowl(isch) mouthpieces also best on that one.

Currently I play the PT-88. It's big and not very easy to play but quite manageable and it gives me the sound I like.
I just received the Bloke symphony and so far I like it, but I need to give it some more time to make my decision.

No I live near Haarlem, but you are correct that the name is coming from the east...

Yes I know what you mean, sometimes it is more than the MP itself....

In that case you could mail/call Terpstra in Badhoevedorp and see what mouthpieces they have available, and see if you can try a bunch.

Hi, I wouldn't recommend Henk Rensink. I went there for a trombone mouthpiece, didn't work for me. A little later I contacted Doug Elliott and after 4 years I'm still playing on his mouthpiece (which very far off Henk Rensink's recommendation).

I suggest you visit a store with enough mouthpieces to test (Adams, steenbeek perhaps, Van der Glas). Perhaps the yamaha Jim Self model is of your liking?

You need a trial time for your choice. The Klier series is good quality middle of the road and not expensive. Look for a shop in NL where they have them available (sorry don't know about the shops over there), start with 3B or 4B and then gradually change rim diameter and/or cup depth, until you find your match. Everything else is just at random. The Jim Self is a nice mouthpiece, sizewise similar to the Klier 3C.
