Re: Favorite tuba
My favorite tubas overall are the Miraphone 186 in BB-Flat or CC and a 1950's Alexander 163 CC my teacher owns. From my personal stable, I would say it is my Miraphone 187.

Re: Favorite tuba
I have been blessed with being able to put together a great stable of horns that I use all the time. My favorites in order are:
Miraphone 188
Hirsbrunner HB50 York model
B&S JBL Classic F tuba (6 valve model) FANTASTIC HORN!!
Miraphone 1291 1/2 CC (has the 1292 leapipe but American receiver and no bell garland)
Miraphone 1291 5 valve BBb
Walter Sear (Cerveny) 4 valve CC - great horn.
Miraphone 1258 euphonium
Bach double Thayer large yellow brass bell bass trombone
Would love to have a Meinl Weston Thor or a Miraphone 1293 to round out the group but am happy with how everything has it's purpose and use.

3+1 BBb Compensating Besson Sovereign from the 70's / 80's, sounded like an organ with a Dennis Wick 1L and the bore / brass was HUGE.

Re: Favorite tuba
When I first got to college, they handed me a beat-up old Alexander 164 BBb and said I needed to switch from the Eb I'd played in HS, and, oh, by the way, first lesson and rehearsal is tomorrow! That Alex, while I didn't appreciate it's lack of finish and dents back then, was simply the best-sounding horn I have ever played. I often wonder if it is still around, sitting in the back of some dusty old storage room.
I am very happy with my present 186BBb, but, oh that Alex sound!

Re: Favorite tuba
Before today I would have said my 983. It is still a wonderful horn, but now I would have to say the Holton 345 BBb that tundratubist has for sale. He and I traded horns for a couple of weeks so I took it out to rehearsal today and wow, this thing just sings. I wish I had the cash for it

Re: Favorite tuba
My 4/4 Nirschl CC is a wonderful horn. I love it.
But I want and could use a 6/4 tuba for orchestral playing. Yes, I know that my 4/4 Nirschl is capable of much more than might be expected of a horn of its size. However...

HB-2, without a 5th valve that horn is still the greatest CC tuba I have ever played. I'm still begging my teacher from high school to trade with me.

Re: Favorite tuba
my Alexander 163 CC is my favorite
Is it the best made, probably not. However, playing this tuba for 40 years I know what this tuba will do and I know the intonation and response very well.
The first three tuba chairs in the community band that I play in use Alexander tubas. The sound of the three Alexanders together is superb (very dark) and the intonation is right on the money.

Mark (principal) and big1096 (third) both play 163 CC tubas. I have a much older BBb which is slightly smaller than a 163. But they sound great together, disproving the saying that BBb tubas and CC tubas don't always play well with each other. In this band, it's Alex all the way.
I have the longest relationship with my Sonora, which we got when I was in high school. Playing that one is like visiting an old friend. If I have to blend in with a non-Alex section, it's easier to do on the Sonora.
So right now, those are my two favorites.

1976 Sonora (B&S 101) 4-rotor BBb

I still have the gold brass Neptune and it is still a fantastic tuba. However I now rarely use, as I am playing Wessex horns - but will never part with it, as I know it is irreplaceable.
