Tuba Player in France needed

Post by tubajoe »

Greetings

A friend of mine, a Grammy-nominated kids’ music guy needs a tuba player for a couple of gigs this summer in France (near Paris, I believe) This guy is the “music teacher to the stars’ kids” here n NYC. He asked me to put the word on the streets.

The music is jazz-ish, but you don’t necessarily need to be a “jazz” person (my background is the usual orchestral stuff just as many of yours is, don’t worry about genre stigma)

You need to be a professional player who can navigate lead sheets / head charts and hold down simple grooves, while being charismatic on stage (it’s a kids’ show)

The charts are fairly simple and the songs are short. I’d describe the overall approach as “sousaphone-ish” (although I don’t use a sousaphone) You’ll need to be comfortable standing while playing, and be able to deal with some minor theatrical elements, such as starting a song offstage and holding it down while climbing up on stage. (see the video) You are the bass player of the band, it’s not a solo show-off thing, it’s a hold-it-down-for-the-band type of thing.

Here is a video from the exact same show, filmed here in NYC:

If you have interest or recommendations, please email me at joe (at) tubajoe (dot) com

PS - these are paid gigs, but there is not the budget for importing a tuba player from far away that is not local to the gigs. (otherwise, I'd probably be doing the gigs, enjoying lovely France!)

Thanks!!

I found another video of us doing the same show in a different venue, so you can see what is required:

Are you Big Momma Tuba? Is that what happens when a Tuba and Bass Clarinet are left with out a chaperone? And then to not keep your baby clarinet supervised what's the number for child services

Liked the music though great concept Big Moma is now stuck in my head
Cant carry a tune but I can carry a tuba.

See if he can get in touch with Thierry Thibeault. He went to Boston Conservatory while I was there. He is fantastic. His group, in France, is called Epsilon 4 or you could get in touch with Mel Culbertson to find him.
