Sousa case

Post by Paul Tkachenko »

Hi all,

I want to get a hard case for my King sousa (I think it's a 2370, fibreglass). I need it for flying.

I was keen on getting the MTS case as it seems cheaper than the SKB and looks just as good. I have flown with an SKB before and, whilst not ideal, it's fine for the fibreglass horn.

However, MTS (who say it will fit my horn) will only freight it over to London for well over $300!

Anyone got any decent ideas/tips/suggestions?

And then you have add VAT and import duty also when importing from the US. Both calculated on the sum of invoice price + shipping costs.

I have no idea about the relative price, nor abou the quality/sturdiness of this one:

That's very handy info.

For the price, I would probably be better off with an SKB as they are cheaper and not bad.

Does anyone know if the fibreglass Kings fit with their 26 inch bell?

You might ask sponsor "Neptune" about a "Chinese" case. Not sure if they're hard foam or wood, but he may be able to get one cheap enough to ease the shipping and 20% vat...Hey! I just remembered Dan Schultz was building a fiber board case, the same material used for trap cases for years. Maybe that would be an affordable option, coupled w/Bloke's bubble wrap idea...

Thanks for this info guys.

Anyone out there got a recent SKB case?

I was quite happy with the SKB case I used before, the MTS ones just looked a bit better and were cheaper (until I realised we don't have any this side of the pond).

If it gets a bit broken, that's fine. Both instrument and case are insured and I'll get the money back from the airline. As the instrument is fibreglass, they'd have to give it some serious attacking before I couldn't use it for a gig on arrival.
