Tuba Excerpts Posted on YouTube

Here are some F tuba excerpts I just completed uploading on youtube. Most of them were brushed up this week since I got this new/old PT 9. This horn used to be mine and when I got the opportunity to get it back I jumped on it. These were recorded on an IPod Touch. Some of the excerpts I hit on the first try while there was one that took about ten. Hopefully as I find more time to play they will get easier.

If you have any specific F tuba excerpts you would like to hear, please post it here and I will see what I can do.

The reason I am only doing F tuba stuff is because I do not have CC I can call my own just yet. If you have anything constructive to say, please let me have it as I look forward to listening to you, I can take it and will use it.

I stress the intent of this post was to record excerpts for other to listen to. This is for educational/entertainment only. This has nothing to do with horn types or demos, this is all about audition type excerpts and the target audience is anyone who is curious about them, interested in getting started on them or just looking for some other ideas to ad to their own way of playing them

If there is an excerpt or even a specific Bordogni that someone would like to hear, let me know and I will see what I can do, keep in mind I only have a F tuba for now.

Hello I looked at your earlier videos Eg the ride and have a question did you use a different camera for the earlier videos?
The reason I ask is that until I got to the Petruska excerpt I felt that I could not clearly hear the quality of tone that I like from a Tuba please I am not suggesting you were not producing a good tone in the first ones it's just that the iPod microphone was struggling on the quieter pieces.
In the Wagner excerpt the mic picked up the background hiss and your breaths clearly but not the playing.
Have you tried placing the iPod on your stand or closer than it was for the quieter pieces?

Very nice! A few thoughts about the videos:

-- ALWAYS helpful to hear a good performance of excerpts. Even if a "work in progress," I find that maybe even more instructive than something dead-perfect.
-- Some videos were way louder/clearer than others. Half of them sounded like something was blocking the mic.
-- A pet peeve of mine about YouTube has always been clicking "play" and then having to wait 15 seconds for something to start. I understand the technical limitations, and also realize that this is really small potatoes stuff. But if it's easy to edit out those first 15 seconds, you might consider that.

These were recorded on two different Ipods, the one with all the background hiss belonged to my younger daughter and she has some issues with it. I guess it is time I get my own.

Zoom, the maker of some great handheld recorders, also makes a line of video cameras with very good sound recording. They are not expensive and will record the audio much better than an iPod.

How does the Flip record low brass instruments?

I didn't listen to -these- videos, but even though I'm not a stovepipe guy, I thought that tall Bb sounded pretty nice.

Although there were differences in the recordings from the two IPods, one of which has been dropped too many times, when I listen to them by connecting them directly to headphones or to the stereo in my car, they sound great. Listening to them on the PC, even with headphones, dont seem to be close to what was actually recorded.

I would suspect the sound card/chipset in the PC if the iPods seem okay. Built-in PC "sound cards" just aren't meant for high-quality music playback, especially to a trained musician. There are good external cards available if you don't feel like installing an internal one but they cost a bit more than the internal versions.
