The version with the Bay Brass is the most intense one. The version with the youth brass band has some immense beauty in the duet between the soloist and a euph, but this version also reveals the weakness of the music. It is just so close to be boring.

I have some qestions about his slide pulling. I know this a common thing with tubists. I am wondering how much pitch adjustment was he actually making, was he adjusting certain notes or just tuning the horn as he went along ?
I am also curios what he was playing there. I've seen a lot of YOUTUBE videos of him and have seen him in person twice. It looks to me he always plays the same horn. Is this correct?

I had the wonderful opportunity to perform this piece with the Natural State Brass Band back in June. Same arrangement and everything. It's quite an enduring piece to work up, but it's definitely one of my favorite pieces that I've played.

I am not sure of the date of the YouTube clip but judging by the video tape quality and the Besson sponsorship it is quite old. He now normally plays on a Norwegian Star 5 valve Eb tuba that he helped design and according to his website the intonation is so good that he no longer has to pull slides.

Have done a bit more research I think that the original video is from 2003 and the Norwegian Star/light has been in production since 2007 and the second video is from 2008. So it's probably a Hisbrunner in the first video.

I think he plays several horns, but I thought "the" Oystein tuba was to be the Star Lite. He wrote on here a year or so ago that he'd be playing the Star with a trombone section doing Prokofiev excerpts at some conference so it would appear that he plays both models occasionally. Some videos look like the tuba is a bit thicker than others as well. The horn in the first video looks like an earlier one (maybe even his old Hirsbrunner Eb? I cannot remember exactly what they look like; I think it's shorter than the Stars) as it has the straight 5th valve tubing.
