Re: World's largest tuba
I wonder why they have positioned the paddles too far away to reach while playing and too largely spaced for a normal hand? Do they actually work? One thing about a rotary tuba is that however large these can be positioned conveniently and of size to use.KiltieTuba wrote:Here is a monster tuba (34-inch bell) made for Jörg Wachsmuth and will be played in 2012 at the Instrumental Competition: http://www.instrumental-competition.de/" target="_blank

Re: World's largest tuba
In what key is it built? By whom? Does it belong to Jörg Wachsmuth?
It is reminiscent of the Amati-Kralice FFF tuba: Kiltie, how did you learn about this tuba?

Evidently it was made to be a work of art rather than a playable tuba.Neptune wrote:I wonder why they have positioned the paddles too far away to reach while playing and too largely spaced for a normal hand? I happened upon these old engravings in a used book - don't know if they have been posted here before:
Obviously a bit of satire/parody...

In addition to the poorly-planned paddles, notice the location of the water key.
You can't dump without tipping the horn over pretty far, but it is mounted firmly in a stand that seems to make tipping impossible.

That is surprising, the company who makes the MUTE for the Melton/MW travel tuba!KiltieTuba wrote:As for the maker, I just know who made the bell -
Meisterwerkstatt für Metallblasinstrumentenbau
Jürgen Voigt
However, it is not their engraving on the bell.

What is the URL of the live stream and/or recording of this concert?KiltieTuba wrote:From what I understand it is playable and already has a piece written for it to be played at the opening of the Competition.
Maybe Jorg only has to use the first and second valve - it is a subcontrabass so it would make sense.

While the BBBb Harvard and Fischer tubas may be the longest, the huge CCC built for Gerard Hoffnung has my vote for largest.

Re: World's largest tuba
For those who might be interested, some more images have popped up on gettyimages website of the world's largest functional tuba at the Musikinstrumenten-Museum on March 8, 2013 in Markneukirchen, Germany.

"The tuba is exactly double the dimensions in every respect to a normal tuba, and twenty local artisans crafted it in 2010 as part of celebrations around the town's 650th anniversary. The tuba will soon travel to Frankfurt, where it will be displayed at the 2013 Music Trade Fair. Markneukirchen has a rich tradition of brass and wood musical instrument manufacture dating back to the 17th century."

Interesting that if it was playable, it would have to be operated by a left handed giant
The model upon which the Yamaha YBB 102 was built?
American sailboats, airplanes, banjos, guitars and flutes ...
Italian motorcycles and cars ...
German cameras and tubas ...

I wish there were more of these huge beasts around. Only thing is it'd take a giant with a huge air supply to play them!
