Re: Rusk Cuts?
Not the answer you want. But.... I would not consider cutting a BBb Marzan/Bohm & Meinl to CC. All you need to do is play a CC Marzan/Bohm & Meinl yourself to know what I mean. Intonation-wise, those two horns do not compare.TheHatTuba wrote:Does anyone know how much it would cost to get a BBb Marzan/Bohm cut to CC by Mr. Rusk, assuming there is no major "other" work needed (or is this way too broad of a question)?
That being said.... I think those horns probably were originally created for the BBb market and a few were 'factory converted' to CC. The CC horns are less than outstanding... in my humble opinion.

Re: Rusk Cuts?
Buy one of Sam Gnagey's tubas instead.
I know cutting sounds like a fun project, and maybe it is...but for most tubas its a lot of trial and error and reinventing the wheel that's not necessary. Keep it in BBb.
Just my opinion.

Good Advice! There's no point in turning a good BBb tuba into a bad CC tuba.bort wrote:Buy one of Sam Gnagey's tubas instead.

Re: Rusk Cuts?
The price I mentioned in that old thread was a wholesale price, and was part of a process that included overhaul, disassembly, and some reassembly by others, not the retail price for doing a project for the end customer. I was mentioning all that to demonstrate the total cost of doing a conversion, which is high--probably too high to support the value of the instrument after conversion. You would have to get the actual price from him. Whether he would even agree to your project is another question that only he can answer.

Re: Rusk Cuts?
I spoke with Mr. Rusk on this topic a few years ago. He actually said that cutting the B&M BBb tubas almost always made a good CC tuba. He spoke about how they took a big shortcut with the CC tubas at the factory that messed up the pitch and said that he would recommend a BBb to CC job without seeing the horn that he worked on. Something he said he would NOT do for ANY other brand of horns he cut. I have a B&M/York tuba and the body is all B&M and it plays very well in tune. Just food for thoughtTubaTinker wrote:Not the answer you want. But.... I would not consider cutting a BBb Marzan/Bohm & Meinl to CC.
