Re: Composers of the 21st century are?
I believe I would agree with Joe(and Bill). John Williams is likely the cream of the crop. I realize there are many who might disagree. There are many who would contest Mozart's standing in the classical world, as well.
As for the use of multiple measures of silence, I believe I(that's right: I, TubaRay) am the master of this genre. In fact, my best works are made up entirely of rests. Since I am able to be the very best at this technique, I have been reluctant to assign the rights to some publisher. These must be worth millions of dollars. If anyone would like to purchase one of my compositions, send me a message and I will email you the music, upon receipt of your payment. I have written for virtually all instrumentations, and have many vocal compositions, as well.

1. Mozart is inferior to both Haydn and Beethoven in my thinking... (I still consider him a genius, and among the greatest ever, the two others really stand out as really brilliant to me.)
2.John Williams is a Master in the art of composition. He has great inspiration, great technical command over the orchestra, he can write in whatever style he wants, etc... He gets performed more than any other living composer and is probably one of the most heard composers ever. (lets not forget that James Horner has both Titanic and Avatar to his credit and that those two movies are among the most popular movies ever)
3. In reality, while I really enjoy Williams music, I do not consider him a 21st century composer. His music sounds very much indebted to the Late 19th and 20ieth century. I have called him a "Pastiche" composer and I think the term is, for the most part, an accurate one.
4. As to your claim of being the master of "Silent" composition. I have looked on Sheet Music plus and not found your music, and since John Cage as a published version, I think you would need to get some lawyers and sue his succession.

I would like to respond to #4(above). As for the other three, I will not attempt to refute them.PMeuph wrote:TubaRay wrote:I believe I would agree with Joe(and Bill). The reason you will not find my music on Sheet Music Plus was explained in my earlier post: "I have been reluctant to assign the rights to some publisher." I simply don't trust any publisher to adequately promote my music for the "art" that it is.

I was being a smart-***... I mean, after all, isn't it quite hilarious that there is an actual score with directions for 4'33"....(And the preview on Sheet music plus is pretty ridiculous since it gives away the whole piece)TubaRay wrote:I would like to respond to #4(above). I completely understood what you were doing, and was in no way offended. Quite the contrary, actually. I was doing the same thing.I was being a smart-***... You're right, and a Mozart-like child prodigy of 10 would probably go unnoticed in today's society...knuxie wrote:Composers born in the 21st century might be a much shorter list. Just saying...

Re: Composers of the 21st century are?
In addition to those already listed,
György Ligeti
Kryszstof Penderecki
Pierre Boulez
George Crumb
Augusta Reed Thomas
Chaya Czernowin
David Felder
John Adams
Steve Reich
Phillip Glass
The reason John Williams sometimes sounds like the 19th century is because he emulates that period for specific affects (well). A friend of mine interned for him and told me how Williams has a whole wall full of all the Romantic scores, and they're all color-coded (red for love, black for space, etc.). When he needs to do a scene for a film, he goes to the ol' wall and reads scores from the corresponding type of musical "scene" in his library.

Re: Composers of the 21st century are?
These really read as a Who's Who of the mid 20ieth century. While most are still composing today, it seems that their biggest innovations all happened around 1950-1970.... I think the Op wanted to know who is the next list of composers to follow the one you just gave...Trevor Bjorklund wrote: György Ligeti

Yes, that's true. You want fresh voices of the 21st (and VERY late) 20th century:
Ken Ueno
Felipe Lara
Aaron Cassidy
Evan Johnson
Samir Odeh-Tamimi
Missy Mazzoli
Sebastian Claren
That's pretty fresh!
