As much as I would like to hear Gene play this for his virtuosity, am I the only one who is tired of this particular solo piece?

I bet the last time van Zweden conducted this was with me in 2003.
As we used to say in NY, "that and a token will get you on the subway". 'Course, even that's ancient history.

If someone/s were planning a massive road trip (imo, a rather poor idea
) from several states away, I might could let them crash at my place. You know, so you won't crash and burn on the way home.

Solos are fun and all, but for my money, I think I'd rather see Gene play the Franck Symphony in D minor on Feb 2,3,4 and 7. Much more meaty tuba playing than Vaughn Williams

Personally I never get tired of this piece. Especially once I understood it's importance. This is the first concerto ever performed on out instrument and I truly believe that if there is one piece that every player should strive to master, and then try to improve any more, it's the Vaughan Williams. It's the piece that started it all.As much as I would like to hear Gene play this for his virtuosity, am I the only one who is tired of this particular solo piece?

Re: Pokorny - Vaughan Williams - Chicago
I've always wanted to see the CSO and I've always wanted to see Gene perform. So I recommended to my wife that we take a holiday in Chicago and I'II catch the concert as part of the holiday. We live in Australia so it's a fair hike, but there are some good deals on flights to the US at the moment.
Anyhow, my main problem is that my wife reckons Chicago isn't the type of place you go for a holiday.....not that she's ever been there.
I hoping some fellow tubists from Chicago can recommend some of the sights and things to do in Chicago, so I can convince my wife.

Re: Pokorny - Vaughan Williams - Chicago
The CSO site is advising that due to the G8 and NATO meetings in Chicago on 5/18 and 5/19, unusually high traffic and security will be a definite factor in getting around the city. They've even rescheduled concerts that were scheduled for those days.
At this point, it appears that Gene's performance of the VW remains intact on May 17.

The CSO is indeed switching concerts around that week because of the G8 Summit occurring in Chicago. As of now performances will occur on May 15, 16, and 17. (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday). The Friday and Saturday performances (if there are any) will not involve the tuba concerto. Cheers, Gene

Re: Pokorny - Vaughan Williams - Chicago
The Friday 5/18 matinee has been moved to Tuesday 5/15 because of the anticipated riots from NATO G-8 in Chicago. Interfering with a tuba concerto is no way to get my sympathy, but I have some doubt they could get it in any event. Since when does the First Amendment trump Pokorny playing the VW? I'd call the cops, but they're already here.
