How should I configure the horn?

Build it as a 28K SOUSAPHONE.

Neither. Scrap both bodies and put the four-valve section on an upright belled Eb tuba.

Oh dear... what to do!

Post by Dan Schultz »

I have two horns. One is a Conn 28K sousaphone (Eb with four pistons). The other is a Conn Eb helicon with the same bore and body parts with the exception of the bell and bell crook. I actually have enough parts to build BOTH the 28K sousa and the 3V helicon. The main question points to which horn should have four valves.

I've already prepared the 4V section by moving the 1st slide to the top and venting the #1 piston. I recognize that being an Eb horn... this probably won't become anyone's 'main axe' and will just be a toy.

It sounds like it might make a REALLY awesome Helicon!

Given otherwise identical configurations, what's the practical difference between a sousaphone and a helicon? I mean, where the helicon has a detachable bell and same leadpipe + bits as a sousaphone.

Basically the same difference as upright bell vs. forward facing bell on a 24J, am I right? It seems to me that on that point, the forward facing bell (i.e., sousaphone) is a more desirable configuration for a shoulder mounted tuba, practically speaking.

I guess my answer would depend on what you plan to do with them. If it were for me I would go with a 4 valve Eb helicon (although I like Mike's suggestion of CC). However, if you plan to sell them I don't think that you would find as much of a market for that as you would for a 28K. In either case the market is relatively low for either in that almost none of the organizations that traditionally used Eb sousaphones in the past currently actually use Eb sousaphones.

Build one horn with interchangable bells, and sell the extra parts to recoup some expense.

Although a Helicon sounds fun, I would be more likely to purchase a 4 valve 28k. It would fit my body better and generally be more flexible in use. As a businessperson, you need to go with the market. A 4 valve Eb is a rare find and can be someones main horn.

Leave the two pieces original.

I just got a REALLY cool Conn Eb Helicon that I plan to spiff up soon. It even has it's original bottom caps with the pearl inlays!

I have been trying very hard to maintain originality in as many old pieces as possible lately. That's why I voted the way I did.
