Gig Bag Advice

Hello.

I need a gig bag - my hard case is toooo big, and no case seems unwise.

I've read nice things about Glenn Cronkhite's bags, and he's local to me - but $400 seems like a lot when there are bags available for less than $200.

Can anyone provide feedback on bags - namely - are any of the less expensive bags decent?

Parenthetically, if anyone wants to buy a large lightly used MTS case, let me know. It's fitted for 40" long horn with a 18" bell.

Honestly, the Cronkhite bags are hard to beat.. I have one for my Eb. However, I do understand if you are not wanting to spend a lot of $$$ on one... from what I have seen, the Pro-Tec bags seem to offer quite good proctection for the $. The only downside to those is the only come in two sizes, so fit can be difficult. But the seem decently made for a decent price.

You get what you pay for. Cronkites are great bags, and if you don't mind top loaders, so are Miraphones. Altieris are a little thin IMO.

Just bought my first Gard bag. Can't beat it for the price ($140.00 for black cordura). Top loader w/pads that velcro to the inside. Get it at WWBW.

I bought a Pro-Tec backpack soft case for about $225 and picked it up from the factory in LA. Never looked back. Love it.

I had an Altieri made for my 186 Recording tuba. Its durable and has plenty of padding. Unfortunately the top-loader design makes it hard to put the horn away and pull it out. I need three hands. I'd like to find a side-loader.

I had a ProTec bag for about a year, until one day the fastener holding the left strap onto the bag snapped and the bag went reeling. My friend's euphonium ProTec case also broke while he was wearing it and gave the horn a nasty dent.

I got a Cronkhite bag shortly after mine broke; 2 years later, there are no signs of mechanical wear. Padding is still nice and cushiony. Worth the extra cash, IMO.

Yer kidding, right? You spend thousands on a tuba, but you are concerned about a coupla hundred bucks to protect your investment? Get the Cronkhite. End of line.......
