Mirafone visit, and their old model cimbasso

Post by kathott »

Hello. Does anyone have any information/history/photos on the OLD Mirafone cimbasso?
This instrument was featured in old promotional literature, but seems to have quietly slipped away. I spoke to a collector once (Texas, I think) who had one. I was at Mirafone this summer, I could have asked them right on the spot, but I was too busy deciding which weird German soda to have, not to mention telling myself "No, you don't NEED a bass trumpet". Anyway, I believe my host mentioned a new cimbasso in the works. Thank you.

I believe Horn Guys has one for sale. I asked about it, but it seemed to be a better idea to get one built.
Edit-

Steve said it plays pretty well down to about an A. I can deal with that but didn't want a straight horn- the reason I'm selling my bass trombone is that the ergonomics are really screwing with my elbow. The Miraphone could be converted but I didn't want to put another grand into it and possibly mar what appears to be a pristine horn. A straight valved bass/cimbasso in the compact piston form would be interesting though.

The only current, similar horn seems to be the Cerveny (who also builds a big bore cimbasso now)-

They make their small horn straight, bent, and bent with 5 valves. I've heard conflicting opinions on them but slightly better about the Miraphone.

Here's a guy playing this type of horn. No idea of the brand-

If you're talking about their old bass trombone (in F, 4 valves), if it plays anything like the old similar Cerveny, run screaming!
