BTW, the Euro today is below $1.30... prices on European horns always go up when the Euro rises--let's see if they now drop---or will it be like gas at the pumps--shoots up like a rocket & comes down like a parachute...........

My guess is that German tuba prices will be affected way more by the Yuan than the Euro...

It seems to me that if the mark-up is only 10% - 15% (making no more than many salesmen-employees who work on commission) the manufacturer/distributor should own the instruments until the moment that I sell them (not requiring me to purchase them with MY dough).
That's what some premium white-goods manufacturers like Miele do (here in Australia at least), so that they get away from the usual manufacturer - wholesaler - retailer chain. The seller is actually acting as an agent, so the manufacturer is able to set the price by avoiding competition between retailers.

For the consumer it's the same result as price-fixing, but there's nothing we can do about it - it's not illegal to structure the selling this way.

No it's not price fixing at all, but it does look like it to most consumers who walk into a store and see discounts available on most items - but not those from Miele etc.

Having said that, I completely agree with Joe that would be a great way for the tuba business to be structured.
