I'm not sure if this is relevant but Jinbao seems to be a person's name. One of the 3 main Chinese forms of martial arts is called Baguazhang. Apparently one of the few remaining people knowledgeable about this form is a person named He Jinbao. My guess is that Neptune or his wife would be the folks most likely to know if the company currently named Jin Bao is named for a person or has some other meaning. The phrase "Zhao Chai Jin Bao" means something like "Your wealth has arrived." Maybe this will help answer your question. :?: :|

Which chinese characters are used for these words? Jin 金 translates to gold and Bao 包 to package, gold package :) But I do not think it is that easy :(

I service a horn in F this week that bore the name of Hanbang. I'd like to know what the heck that means too. If someone doesn't tell me what that name means... I'm simply going to translate Hanbang to mean "really crappy horn in F with MULTIPLE leaks in the solder joints"!

That's fine Jonathan, but it would be interesting to know which Chinese characters it consists of because every character does mean something.
For example the Chinese characters 石橋 for the Japanese tire company Bridgestone, which reversed is English for ishibashi=stonebridge, means just stone 石 and bridge 橋.
So which Chinese characters are involved in the Jinbao name?

LJV wrote:Using Google translate, as imperfect as it is, when typing in Jin Bao it suggests a "did you mean" of the input characters of 警报. It then translates them into "Alert."

Might be a good name for a musical instrument company, if this is correct.
Yes it might. However, after digging around a bit more I found the following characters 津 宝 on a site, where Jinbao instruments are showed, and they could be translated to Tianjin Treasure, which in turn also would be a good name for whatever they make. The characters may have a couple of meanings. When using one of them the first character may mean tsunami? , which, if so, is fine for wind instruments, especially large tubas in a symphony orchestra, trombonists all over the world also appreciate that description. :-)

Waiting for Jonathan to confirm both the characters and their meaning/s?

And, well, there is some English text on the site too :"...Jin Bao's spirit of "Quality is enterprise's life," the purpose, as always, to the integrity of excellence, providing customers with high quality services to customers around the world to provide the most competitive products..."

My understanding is the Chinese just use symbols with the sound they want to make names. For example "Jonathan" can be converted into Chinese that way - in fact it was on my wife's engagement ring to me. However the otherwise meaning of those symbols has nothing to do with the name, so looking for meaning is a pointless exercise.

I reckon if you contacted the factory asking as in this thread they would be as bemused as my wife was when I asked her!

It would be a bit like phoning up Apple, or Microsoft and saying "What is the meaning of your name?"

Correct and maybe they also look out for the best characters to the name because there are probably more than one character with the same sound, as in Japanese? But the interesting thing is that every character has one or more meaning/s even if they are only used as sounds to form a name, as per my example with Bridgestone that could also be interpreted as a a stone bridge but is the founder Mr Ishibashi's name. It is very easy to count with those characters, just like this one, two, three, 一 二 三 ...

Jonathan, which characters are used for your name in Chinese? How many characters are Chinese people supposed to learn for daily use to read a newspaper or a book?

The name Apple was chosen because the company to beat in the technology industry at the time was Atari, and Apple Computer came before Atari alphabetically and thus also in the phone book. Another reason was that Jobs had happy memories of working on an Oregon apple farm one summer.

Allen came up with the original name of Micro-Soft (a portmanteau of microcomputer and software), as recounted in a 1995 Fortune magazine interview with Allen and Gates.[8] Hyphenated in its early incarnations, on November 26, 1976 the company was registered under that name with the Secretary of State of New Mexico. The company's first international office was founded on November 1, 1978, in Japan, entitled "ASCII Microsoft" (now called "Microsoft Japan"), and on November 29, 1979, the term, "Microsoft" was first used by Bill Gates.[9] On January 1, 1979, the company moved from Albuquerque to a new home in Bellevue, Washington.[9] Steve Ballmer joined the company on June 11, 1980, and would later succeed Bill Gates as CEO.[9] The company restructured on June 25, 1981, to become an incorporated business in its home state of Washington (with a further change of its name to "Microsoft, Inc."). As part of the restructuring, Bill Gates became president of the company and Chairman of the Board, and Paul Allen became Executive Vice President.[9]
