mini JUMBO Sousaphone Summit 2012 - Elgin. IL

Yesterday Steve Marcus and I got together to compare Jumbo Sousaphones. We had his Conn 48K, my King 1265, and my Conn 40K (just for fun). We met at a church in Elgin, Il, and did some tooting. I thought I would share some video and photos from our meeting.

We also created the Super Jumbo Sousaphone. Although the Conn 48K receiver is large enough to not be able to have the King bell fit into it snug, the 48K's screws held it in nicely. There was a bit of room for air to leak out, but it did pretty well. Steve and I believe that Kiltie should consider making a custom collar adapter and finding a way to cut the Conn a little for it to play in tune!!!! Here's a video of how it sounded:

Overall, it was a fun meeting! These horns are great. The 40K seemed really tiny in comparison, but all three horns had a great sound. Steve's jumbo has had an impressive restoration. I hope to do the same to both of my horns someday!

The size of the Sousaphones in these photos reminds me of one my friend, Charlie Vega, once had. It was an upright-bell, "rain-catcher" Sousaphone of gargantuate proportions. We used to call it the moosaphone.
