Low brass trios

Post by Tubaru »

I am in need of a low brass trio to use on an upcoming concert. My cohorts play horn and trombone. I could play trombone, euphonium or tuba. Preferred instrumentation would be for horn, trombone and tuba but we are willing to consider trios which the top part could be transposed for horn. Difficulty is not a problem.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Triangles by John Stevens. My friends and I performed it on a Doctorate Recital a few years ago. Check it out.

I had a trio in college with Horn, Euph and Tuba. The Poulenc Trio worked well with the Euph taking the Trumpet part.

John Stevens has a great trio that might work called Triangles:

It is a ton of fun!

Caleb burhans "gatekeeper" look him up... It's worth it. I commissioned it with my group 'Scalene'
It's a ghostbusters reference.

IMPROMPTU- by Roger Deegan (Canada)
recorded by Gene Porkorny, tuba, Jerry Folsom, horn, and Michael Mulcahy, trombone.
A great little trio by this Canadian composer/music for films. A bit quirky, fun to play and listen to.

Members of the BQ I am used to always program a lowbrass trio on recitals so the complaining trumpets could rest their precious chops.

We always used trombone trios... the horn or trombone would take the lead depending on the context, range, etc. I would obviously take the third part. It always worked out well, of course your horn player needs to be savy enough to read bass, and sometimes tenor clef. Lots of literature out there for trombone trio!

There are many works for this complement. We have most of them in the workshop library. Go here to check them out:

Look at B12.3f - Low Brass Trios.

Good luck.

That is why I am looking for some trios. The trumpet players in my quintet are always complaining about their chops getting tired. The three of us low brass players are usually just getting warmed up by the end of a concert so we thought we might do a trio on our next one just to give them a break.
