I am a huge fan of Jose Davila - NYC based player who works with Henry Threadgill, Steve Lehman, and many others. Fantastic tuba player and musician!

I play early jazz and Dixieland mostly; Sam Pilafian got me started and inspired, and still inspires my vocabulary and sound.

The other is someone almost no one will know... a dear friend of mine Doug Handyside, a Cleveland native who's sound was the epitome of the classic 20s and 30s band sound... percussive, full, perfect.

I enjoy Howard and Dave too :)

J.c.S. (RIP my friend, and thank you!).

Dave is a sponser on this forum and sells a couple of his recordings. Also, recordings of Red Lehr and Rich Matteson. It's the link with the jewels I think "Tuba Jems". Ed

Matt Perrine and Sunflower City

incredibly creative neo-dixieland.

And Howard Johnson plays the tuba like it is a sax. He just has the jazz vocab down not just in a bass line instrument but melodically as well.

Stefan Kac as soloist, Matt Perrine and Nat MacIntosh for bass-lines. Marcus Rojas for random other stuff.

Then of course: Howard Johnson, Jon Sass, Jim Self, Dave Bargeron, Sérgio Carolino - and can't forget Michel Godard. (my 2 cents)

Bob Stewart
Marcus Rojas
Jay Rozen

Love these guys!

Jon Sass (Funk, I heard Sam Pilafian once refer to Sass as Dr. Funkenstein)

Dan Perantoni (laid back and does it without having to play a billion notes, tasty)

Harvey Phillips (for section playing/solos, don't believe me, check out any of his recordings with Sauter/Finegan, Gus Vali, etc. Still the most under-rated)
