The students went to the Admins to explain that it was just a tuba/music site. I understand that in both cases, the requests to allow access to TubeNet was denied.

I did know that it couldn't be accessed in local school districts' networks already, but their filters are usually pretty well clamped down.

Kinda comical, if you ask me!

People stealing tubas and sousaphones and now talking about them is banned!

+1 TubeNet is now banned at all the districts where I teach and at a few colleges and universities. Of course, you can always view TubeNet and actual porn at any ALA public library around here. Even small children can watch it if they can log on unsupervised. Go, ALA! Save our rights to porn and other online poison! Thanks, so much for spending my money in such a manner...

Individual user computers may have browsing data that contribute to the problem - but the problem exists independent of that.

Having said all of that, Tubenet is what it is. So don't recommend it to your minor students.

Remember, there is a post from bloke stating that he got the ads on a brand new computer if I remember correctly. Odds are it's as much internal than external. With that being said, Tubenet has long been a place I wouldn't recommend to minors. Sad, but true. Hell, there is very little that the web has to offer that I would recommend to minors.

I was seeing them at the Apple Store when they unboxed and set up my new iPhone. It had never been turned on. They set it up and I tested several sites for connectivity and speed. TubeNet was one of the three or four that I checked. And I saw lots of ads.

I believe that the advertiser was pulling a fast one and posting different ads than what they contracted for, using mundane words to see if they could get around filters that way. But what do I know? I could not possibly know anything, according to some of the responders in this thread, who are a bit out of touch with the current crimes and such, it seems.

I do not have an ad blocker on my phone. I DO now have AdBlock on all my computers. But that was not doing anything for any Mississippi visitors for about four months. I had to do a LOT of explaining to several angry band directors and parents after the initial explosion. Sorry for trying to help a kid find a horn. Mama did not want me involved and wanted to contact sellers directly. Some of you may have talked to her. She was the testy one that poor-mouthed whatever price you may have posted and then tried to make you feel guilty for not accepting her $900 on your HB-2P. Yeah, her. She trashed me around here and I am still working out of that. And her trashing was because to those damned ads that were all over the site on every phone and computer in this area for four months. I complained and asked for Sean to look into this. It took some doing. They are gone now. O do not know if Sean did anything or not. I still believe that some company was spoofing Google and that Google pulled the ads themselves.

Since Adsense came out, several people have tried to earn full time salaries using adsense and have claimed that you can become rich. Some people who read these types of "programs" ( You can buy plenty on ebay for $10), will try whatever they can to lure people into there traps. Adsense sometimes gives out vouchers to incite new customers. The owner of the website you were seeing, probably had one of those.

But honestly, Wade, Have you tried a tweaked "hosts" file on your computer? It might be better than adblock....

Just an update:

Tubenet was blocked from use at the Sheraton in Oklahoma City this last weekend, where I was working. It cited that it was, "A webpage that contains indecent Pornographic Material or References!"

Has anyone given further thought to a different funding model for TubeNet?

If the random/semi-random advertising was removed and replaced with donations and/or genuine musical advertising content placed by TubeNet, some or all of TubeNet's blocking problems would disappear. This would take organization and cooperation from Sean but has anyone else considered this as a possibility?

Aa random thought which has come to me is that, perhaps, "TubeNet" as a name is being misinterpreted by filtering agents. Variations of the "YouTube" name are being used to draw attention to sites which provide porn video content. Or, the 'tube' in TubeNet is being interpreted as refering to male 'tubes'.

The owner here drives the bus. He's publicly stated that he's no longer interested in TubeNet, but does keep it running which is nice of him. Maybe he's just pushing for someone to start their own thing. Or, maybe if someone he felt was worthy of the driver's seat approached him, he would hand over the keys to them.

Here was my response several weeks ago to diffent funding models...

viewtopic.php?f=7&t=48462... target="_blank.

It might be that
"TubeNet" as a name is being misinterpreted by filtering agents.
It could also be that certain words (used innocently) like dating, girls, "Naked Lady" are found on this board and are misinterpreted. With the filtering of some algorithm these "keywords" might be drawing in the ads....

I just installed a free app on my MacBook called Do Not Track Plus (DNT+) from a company called Abine http://www.abine.com/dntdetail.php?. All of the offending ads on the right side of the screen are gone. After the quick download and install, there's a small icon on the top right corner of my Firefox window. Clicking this icon gives you itemized list of what's blocked and who's tracking you. (e.g. Google Adsense) It seems to work extremely well and the free isn't just an introductory or time-limited version. Here's info from the above referenced website:
Free tool that puts you back in control of your information
Best available blocking stops more than 600 trackers
Compatible with Mac or PC for Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Internet Explorer
Automatically updates to catch new trackers

Hope this is of some use to folks; those ads were annoying and certainly wholly inappropriate in a school setting.

As a rule of thumb to teachers I would not recommend websites with forums on them.
I always get worried when one of my students says I saw this great performance on you tube.
I know people want to help kids out with information but if you can not guarantee the content 24/7 then don't.

In regards to funding I still have not heard back about my request to sponsor.

+1. This remedy resulted in a very significant/positive change in the "viewing experience" on this site (at least for me) with the 'questionable ad' matter. (In other words, suddenly more "kid/wife/student -friendly...)
