I'm a little surprised no one has mentioned Ron Caswell.

As far as tuba players go this Man is my idol. I strive to play like him every time I pick up my horn.

That is an interesting modification to the Sousaphone third valve branch - anti-vibration (like a Monette trumpet) or for some other reason?TubadudeCA wrote:Lee "Westy" Westenhoffer on his old beautiful Conn Sousy!

It's an additional support for the third valve bracings. I guess the Solder on the braces kept breaking every so many years so he fixed permanently hahaDavid Richoux wrote:That is an interesting modification to the Sousaphone third valve branch - anti-vibration (like a Monette trumpet) or for some other reason?TubadudeCA wrote:Lee "Westy" Westenhoffer on his old beautiful Conn Sousy!

Some more Laymon Jackson with the Nat Adderley sextet. He throws a nice little solo in there too.

Hi TuadudeCA,
sorry for my question, but in Germany the sousaphone is not very popular,
and respect, he plays very high and quickly for a BBb!!!
Greetings
Jens

Re: What is THE jazz tuba/player to you?
I thought Kent Eshelman did some mighty nice jazz soloes with the US Army Blues at the tuba/euph conference this year. He was followed by David Bandman, who really blew me away with his blazing euph soloes. Then the 2 of them did some tunes together- fantastic! Kent was very smooth and inventive- a lot of fun to listen to.

Re: What is THE jazz tuba/player to you?
Hi Everyone,
I wanted to chime in here! First, thanks very much to Jack Denniston for his kind comments above about the recent Army Blues concert at the U.S. Army Band Tuba-Euphonium Workshop. David Bandman has posted some YouTube videos of that, including two of our "duet" tunes:
A Wink and a Smile http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6WAGcRB3uDY
Battle Hymn http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xw3HfS28jU
Secondly, I was so saddened to find out just a few days ago that one of the greatest jazz tuba/euphonium artists passed away last fall from cancer at the age of 55. Brad Felt was a creative, masterful improvisor and composer...truly a first-rate jazz musician who we are blessed to have had on our instrument. His CDs and compositions are excellent. Particularly his 2009 CD “First Call” with his Nu Quartet is one of my favorites. I’ll never forget hearing him sit in on tuba at a gig in Detroit with some of the best local players on a very fast rendition of “Giant Steps.” He was playing a BBb tuba, and I remember thinking that I would be terrified to try to follow the incredible soprano sax solo that had just been played, at that tempo, especially on BBb tuba! As it turns out, Brad’s solo was even better!!! Really amazing. I was fortunate enough to know him for a number of years and to perform with him at the 2007 Midwest Regional ITEA Conference in Kalamazoo, and I remember vividly how incredibly infectious his passion for music was. He was always very warm and encouraging to me and his musicianship inspirational.
Here’s a clip of him playing one of his compositions http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php ... 4&comments. Also, his website is still up and includes several tracks from his CD "First Call": http://bradfeltmusic.com/?section=press.
He will be missed but not certainly not forgotten!
