Tuba in the news...
A local paper came by and noticed me practicing outdoors the other day.

Funny little blurb, good pic. In hindsight I wish I had stated that "there is comparatively lesser quantitiy of great solo music written for the tuba".

“The tuba has only been around for 200 years,” Vokits explained, “so there’s not a lot of solo music written for the tuba.”
Geeez, just how long does it take to write a tuba solo ???

i am face palming that... but there is truth to it, when was the first "SOLO" written exclusively for tuba, Beelzebub? if so, it was quite a few years after the invention of the horn.aqualung wrote:“The tuba has only been around for 200 years,” Vokits explained, “so there’s not a lot of solo music written for the tuba.”

I rarely practice there. I practice in a studio that I share with my wife towards midtown (Chelsea), but I was lazy that nice afternoon, and had a tuba in the nearby apartment left over from that weeks late night rehearsal. I didn't want to practice in the apartment: I don't need the ret-NJSO percussionist upstairs commenting on my routines (you've improved "so much" - embarasing) or cause the hearing loss of my daughter who was napping at the time.PMeuph wrote:Nice picture!

Meeting Elijah was fun. The kid was very excited about music. I know he wanted to toot the horn, but I told him he should wait until he was a little older. I did let him pop/hand-slap my mouthpiece in the tuba, and work the valves.

Re: Tuba in the news...
And how is this for linking TUBA with a good topic?????????????????
Vokits recalled that he was just a little older than Elijah — maybe 7 or 8 — when he started studying piano. As for why he switched to tuba, “The sound has a low pitch when it mixes with the strings,” said Vokits. “It creates a beautiful, understated resonance.”
Benvenuti changes hours: Benvenuti, which sells pizzas and Italian specialties at 235 South End Ave., is now open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. On Tuesdays, the store is offering a spaghetti and meatball special for $5 (cash). With the pleasant spring weather, there’s now outdoor seating. Benvenuti also delivers. Call (212) 945-2100.
Are they any good, Ben

Good thing you have a day job, otherwise the interview could have been a little embarrassing!
